Planning Checklist

When planning a residency it may be useful to:-

  • consult staff about their ideas and what they want
  • decide on a set of aims - what the school as a whole wants to achieve
  • check how the residency fits into whole school planning
  • decide what facilities you can offer
  • find out about sources of funding and make applications
  • select an artist (look at a range - you might like to start with those listed on this website under "Directory of Practitioners")
  • tell the artist:
    • what you want to do
    • how you envisage doing it
    • what facilities you can provide
    • the timescale, how many days and roughly when the residency will take place
    • the budget for materials
  • set up initial meetings with the selected artist: exchange ideas
  • invite the artist to submit a written proposal to the school
  • agree a residency plan with the artist
  • agree a materials list
  • draw up a contract for services with the artist
  • prepare for the residency: inform pupils, staff, parents and governors, mount an exhibition, stage the residency
  • monitor progress
  • evaluate on completion
  • hold concluding event or exhibition
  • finally: what changes do you wish to make to the delivery of the art and design curriculum as a result of the residency?
