Planning checklist

You may wish to prepare a pack of information about yourself and your work which can be given away:-

  • CV
  • artist's statement
  • publicity material (post cards, press cuttings, leaflets, etc.)
  • details of any previous education experience or projects.

Agree a brief outline of the project with the co-ordinating teacher which covers:-

  • a joint set of aims
  • a brief outline of the project
  • where you will work, with whom and how
  • a timetable showing contact and non-contact time
  • additional materials required
  • preparation by you and the school
  • the anticipated outcomes.

Prepare a Project Outline to be sent to the co-ordinating teacher at the school.

Note: These points will form the first part of the evaluation of the residency and will be the basis of the contract.

Before the start of the contract you need to consider any preparation work.

For example:-

  • mounting an exhibition of your work
  • giving an introductory talk to teachers or parents
  • writing worksheets/briefs or information sheets
  • picture research, or a preparatory visit to a museum or gallery
  • ordering special materials or supplying the school with a materials list.

During the residency:-

  • Carry out work as agreed
  • Keep a note of daily activities
  • Keep a photographic record
  • Discuss progress with the co-ordinating teacher on a regular basis (at the end of each day)

At the end of the residency you may wish to meet the co-ordinating teacher and discuss:-

  • perceived achievements and attitudes of pupils/students
  • the intended outcomes and whether they were achieved
  • any other outcomes
  • implications for the future delivery of the art curriculum
  • implications for your approach to a residency in the future.
